What Is Dog Training?

Dog training, in my experience, is far more than teaching your pet to follow commands. It’s about building a bridge between two very different species, humans and dogs, so we can communicate clearly, understand each other’s needs, and live in harmony.

We speak different languages, have different priorities, and rely on very different senses. That’s why I believe training should start with the creation of a simple, shared vocabulary: a basic set of words and actions that allows you to guide your dog’s behaviour in a kind, clear, and effective way.

Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of people and their pets, and one truth always stands out: when we learn how to communicate effectively, everything changes.

In our sessions, we’ll focus on core commands such as:

Your dog’s name (attention cue), Come, Sit, Down, Stay, Heel, Leave.

Using the principles of Operant Conditioning, we’ll lay the foundation for reliable training. More importantly, we’ll explore why certain techniques work and how to apply them in real-life scenarios. Every session is hands-on, engaging, and adapted to suit your character and learning style. Because no two humans, or dogs, are alike, I tailor the method to fit you and your pet. But all techniques I use are reward-based, ethical, easy to understand, and suitable for the whole family. Consistency is the real key to success.

Our standard training course runs over six weeks, with weekly sessions held in the comfort of your own home. We’ll revisit exercises, build on progress, and ensure you feel fully supported every step of the way. By the end, you’ll not only have a well-behaved dog, you’ll also have the confidence and knowledge to continue training independently. Whether you’re starting from scratch with a new puppy, welcoming a rescued or older dog into your home, or simply refreshing your skills with a dog you’ve had for years…I’d love to hear from you.

Many of the methods I teach are also explored in my dog training book, which draws on decades of experience and offers insight into canine behaviour, communication, and the human-canine bond. It’s a practical companion to our sessions, and a great starting point if you’re just beginning your journey.

Please feel free to contact me for more information or to schedule an initial consultation. I’d be delighted to help you and your dog achieve a more balanced, fulfilling relationship.
